Fee Fi Fo Fum
by Ken
The biggest trend I see going on at most courthouses is the fee game. There are fees for everything. Fees for copies, fees for witnessing signatures, fees for searches, fees for "free" legal clinics. WTF
Recently, I went to my bank to get some legal documents notarized. I had two signatures witnessed by a Notary, got a total of three pages photocopied, and a cup of coffee... all for free. Yes, really, free.
I mentioned this to a colleague, and she told me what should have been obvious to me a long time ago... She no longer tells her clients to have their paperwork witnessed at the courthouse by a Deputy Clerk. Instead, she directs them to their bank. Even if they are charged a fee, at the very least, they might qualify for a free toaster!
What are the fees at your county's Clerks of Court?
