Legalese

I was attempting to read a contract the other day and I couldn't begin to understand it.  Someone told me that's because it is written in legalese.  Can you explain to me what legalese is and why they don't just use regular English?

Legalese as a Foreign Language

Dear Karen,
Sometimes there is a reason they use the wording they do on contracts and such. Sometimes the wording is shorthand for a larger idea that believe it or not, can be expressed more efficiently in those words that seem to make no sense at all. But, when regular people have to be able to understand the wording, the use of the "legalese" doesn't communicate the meaning. The following is a link to a page that promotes eradicating legalese:
