Prescription drugs

by oh no
(Florida)

I recently saw a story on the news about a lot of people getting arrested for filling pain prescriptions all over the United States, especially here in Florida.  How can I tell if my doctor and pharmacy are licensed to fill my prescription so I don't have to worry about getting arrested?

Prescription Pain Medicine
by: Judy L.

The following is an excerpt from the St. Petersburg Crime Examiner, article by Aaron Slavin, in May of 2010.

"Out-of-state cars jammed the parking lot of the "Wellness Center" for weeks. Local business owners pointed out the other two (2) businesses that were being raided just down the street — the VIP Pharmacy and Macron Medical Technologies, on the 1900 block of West MLK Boulevard.

Sadly enough, a day care center operates right across the street from the Wellness Center. Chad Locicero, owner of A Today's Child, said parents have been afraid to leave their kids because of the crowds and problems associated with these "pill mills."

Locicero asked the police if the pain clinic would be shut down permanently; however, he couldn't get a promise from the Tampa PD.

At the beginning of the raid, when police arrived on scene, they trapped dozens of customers in the back parking lot of the Wellness Center, herding them all against a wooden fence with their hands raised. However, despite the large police presence and the use of valuable law enforcement resources, only four (4) customers were arrested on misdemeanor charges."

I have heard of more than one innocent person being caught up in a police sting at the pharmacy. One of the people was a customer of one of the pain clinics that was shut down, and when he went to fill his prescription he was arrested; and the other person was arrested at her home after filling her prescription. Both had valid prescriptions from their doctors with valid identification etc.
