Child Custody - across state lines
by: Anonymous

Hi Dwayne,
The name of the law that governs custody across state lines is the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction Enforcement Act (UCCJEA). It is a federal law, and I believe 49 states have now adopted it. One of the main reasons that law exists is to prevent conflicting child custody orders state to state. Only one state may have what is called in the law - Continuing Exclusive Jurisdiction.

To answer your specific question - it sounds like you will need to file a Petition to Relinquish Child Custody in North Carolina; and a Petition to Domesticate a Foreign Order in Florida. Please consider my comments as information, not advice. And continue your research on your own, or consult an attorney.
