Members and Friends

This free newsletter is published every month for the benefit of FALDP members, legal document preparers, and friends. We hope it is informative, useful, and entertaining.

Third Annual Conference

Although the conference was only a few weeks ago, it already seems like it months ago. Holding it in St. Augustine worked out well, because many of the members family and friends tagged along for sightseeing and fun. Also, I think having it for two days worked well, because members had a great chance for getting to know one another. The venue at the Hilton couldn't have been nicer.

Special thanks to all attendees. We are not an association without you. I know it can be difficult to break away from your lives and customers to participate in a business event -- I thank you so much for coming. I hope each member took home the same value that I did.

Another special thanks to all of our speakers. The educational opportunities, the new ways to earn money, and the add-ons that were presented all work together to help us all grow.

Please visit our Conference 2012 Page to learn more about the specific opportunities presented. We are launching a new section on our site for opportunities like business add-ons, partnerships, and affiliate relationships. Please keep an eye out for that new page in the next few weeks.

Online Courses are Moving

We are relaunching our online courses. Our courses will come down from their spaces on on October 30. We are moving them to new urls. If you are in the process of taking any of the courses please finish them by the end of October. If you are unable to finish a course, please contact us, so that we can make arrangements for you to finish.

New Project Launch

We have launched a new project - a series of surveys about pro se access to the legal system. Please ask your customers to complete the survey, and if you can help us get the word out in other ways, all the better. Please place the link on your site, add it to your email signature, or whatever you can to help us reach as many pro se litigants as possible. Here is the link:

Pro Se Survey

This is the first in a series of surveys. We are in the process of designing county specific surveys, and surveys targeted towards courthouse personnel, judges, and attorneys. Once we have collected a large enough sample, we will publish our findings.

How Do We Look?

FALDP had a make over. We hope you like it. It isn't yet completely finished, we've been working hard to give our site a fresh modern look. There are still a few things that may not have integrated quite right. Please let us know if you find any broken links, or outdated content.

UPL Defense

We've been researching the concept of the unauthorized practice of law (UPL) for a while now. In fact, as many of you know, UPL is one of the reasons we formed this association. No, not so we can practice law without authority - so we can avoid doing so. Each of us, every legal document preparer, wants to continue to work another day. We all want to be able to earn a living, help others, and not have to needlessly worry about whether we have inadvertently stepped in the murky gray mush of UPL.

We don't have any special "in" with the Florida Bar, but we do have some ideas that may help you, if you receive a notice letter. The notice letter usually begins - something like - we have opened an investigation concerning your unauthorized practice of law. And it goes on to say, more or less, what the Florida Bar UPL Committee person believes you have done that constitutes UPL. If you receive this letter, please let us know.

We are developing some specific strategies to help you avoid even the appearance of being engaged in the unauthorized practice of law.

In the next few weeks we'll be hosting a UPL Summit Webinar. It is tentatively set for October 20, at 11:00 a.m. EST. All members will receive an invitation, and you must be a member to participate. There is no charge for any of our UPL Summits. We try to have one of these webinars, focusing specifically on UPL, at least once per quarter.

We accept member's announcements and appreciate your contributions.
