Answering Divorce Complaint

You do not need a lawyer to file an Answer to a Divorce Petition. People file Answers on their own (Pro Se) all the time. Some people use Legal Document Preparers to prepare the Answer for them. You can always hire an attorney at any time in the process. But you must file an Answer within 20 days of being served the summons or you risking losing the right to respond and defend. When you file an Answer you must consider whether or not you need to file a counterpetition as well. A counterpetition presents your issues for the courts consideration as opposed to simply responding to your spouses allegations. You can find court approved forms at www.flcourts.org.
